The Latest Results of American Studies, V. International Symposium

Symposium The Latest Results of American Studies

3–5 September 2025, Wrocław

The principal theme of the Symposium centred on the most recent advances in archaeological science, cultural and physical anthropology, and in landscape, field, and material studies, with particular emphasis on their significance for understanding the evolutionary trajectories of pre-Columbian and colonial societies of the New World. The sessions presented not only the results of ongoing research projects but also fostered critical debate on methodological frameworks and on strategies for disseminating scientific knowledge to broader audiences.

Among the major issues addressed during the Symposium were environmental and climatic transformations, their impact on the development and resilience of prehistoric communities throughout the Americas, and the problem of anthropogenic modifications of ecosystems. In this context, special attention was devoted to the growing importance of interdisciplinary approaches, incorporating recent advances in the physical, chemical, biological, and botanical sciences. Building upon these perspectives, contributors presented case studies illustrating the potential of non-invasive and remote-sensing techniques, as well as the implementation of cutting-edge analytical tools in the archaeology of environmentally or logistically challenging regions. Parallel discussions concerned the complex dimensions of pre-Columbian heritage, including its sociocultural contexts, ethical considerations, and methodological implications for contemporary scholarship.

The meeting provided a valuable platform for the exchange of experience and research outcomes among representatives of diverse academic and scientific institutions, and it facilitated dialogue across disciplinary and regional boundaries. The Symposium, held in Wrocław on 3–5 September 2025, was hosted by the Institute of Archaeology, University of Wrocław — one of the oldest and most prominent centres of archaeological research in Poland.
